The U.S. Federal Government reports that
benzalkonium chloride ("BC") is an antimicrobial pesticide introduced to
the United States in 1935. It is used widely in medical and domestic
settings. The government reports that the following as the advantages
of BC---
- Economical to use.
- Low acute toxicity when diluted properly.
- Useful on a wide variety of sites from fabrics to hard
surfaces.
- Effective against
a wide variety of microorganisms.
The
federal government reports that BC acts by disrupting the cell walls of
