LONDONDERRY, New Hampshire
--- Londonderry voters yesterday overwhelmingly approved the school
district's $1.5 million supplementary appropriation to eliminate moisture
and mold at South School.
The emergency summer project
was completed in late August.
Of the ballots 1,964 ballots
cast, 1,489 supported the supplementary appropriation; 469 voted against it;
and six blanks.
Three out of every four
voters endorsed the mold purging project.
"We're thrilled, and I think
it just shows that it was a health and safety issue, and emergency issue,"
Superintendent Nate Greenberg said last night. "We're grateful for the
support."
Board chairman Anne Jacoby
agreed. "It was an emergency situation, and we had to address safety
issues," she said. "The community once again stepped to the plate, and
addressed what was needed, in terms of a quality school structurally and
academically."
District maintenance and Pro
Con last summer cleared the building of all furniture, before removing
exterior wall sheetrock, insulation and gypsum, and replacing the ceiling
tiles and the lower windows.
The contractors insulated the
building with foam, installed new ventilations units, and dug new weep
holes. The supplementary appropriation will be tacked on to the 2004-2005
school year budget.
